I started at Jim Hogg park and headed west toward Russell park. This section of the trail weaves gently along the side of the lake bluff providing a peaceful walk through typical central Texas flora, lots of Oaks & Cedar. It was peaceful with occasional chirping birds. A minus were the dogs from area (rarely visible) neighborhoods who did go on periodic barking sprees. There are some distant lake views. At one point, the trail crosses a creek and steeping stones have been provided. A small pool is above the crossing area that is feed by a small waterfall ... the size may be the result of the current drought conditions. Overall, this was a very pleasant, enjoyable hike. I am looking forward to traveling other sections. I was pleased to see the total lack of any trash :) Way to go fellow hikers! Sturdy shoes are recommended.

A beautiful day for hiking! Apparently the cyclists and deer had the same idea ... I saw several while on the fenceline trail. The fence line trail begins as an old ranch road but quickly turns into a deeply rutted path. Some of the ruts are up to two feet deep! This trail winds through a dry creek bed before connecting with Twister Trail at "Mother's Vista", a granite plaque with a bench on private property placed by her children ... a sweet and touching memorial. Twister Trail forks to the left and is so far the best-marked trail I've found in the park. This was a fun trail to hike with alot of terrain variety. It also appeared to be one not often traveled. One cool feature was the mixture of "fossilized shells" & rocks ... a great "discovery" for the young archeologist!
Pleasant, well-marked trails

I have hiked McKinney Roughs several times and always enjoyed my experience :) There are several well-maintained interconnecting trails that wind through some delightful scenary. Watch out for the clay-based mud near the river if it's rained recently. A hint: spray your shoes with Pam first, the mud doesn't stick! One feature I like at this park, all the trails have signs that point you back to headquarters ... no guess work.

I hiked the Twin Peaks trail from the main trailhead, down the firebreak, and around the peaks. This trail is fairly level and does not venture up on to the peaks, however there are side trails available to do so. The hike was beautiful walking along the lake, around the peaks with changing foilage, and clear blue skies. Amazingly, there was no one else on the trail. Trails markers can be confusing, take your map.

Miller Springs was a pleasant hike. There is a variety of interesting terrain, especially the hollow. Main paths are not well-marked. It can be either an easy or more challenging hike. Be careful to leave by shortly BEFORE sunset or the ranger will lock you in ... I learned the hard the way!
