Nice Surprise for the 4th of July
Falls Of San Gabriel Trail [Hiking] - 7/4/2010  [View Log Page]
Rating: 2stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 3stars
Distance: 2.00 Miles Duration: N/A

We didn't really know what to expect about this  trip but only had limited time so I thought it would be fun to try out this little trail. Took the family and another family for a morning hike on this 4th of July.  It was the first time out for my friend and his little one's (7 & 9) so the the bugs and frogs were an instant attraction.  Hiked to the river and everybody jumped in because the water was flowing and only about six inches deep. Another great feature were the caves along thte way and they had some stalagtites!Great little trail tucked away in an up and coming neighborhood. Remember that at the begenning of the trial is kinda in peoples back yards so try to respect their rights to privacy.

What a beautiful place!

Cinco de mayo! First of all, the drive from Austin to Fredricksburg was magnificent. The winding roads and scenery was breathtaking but WOW it was a long drive. I would suggest planning on staying the night in Fredricksburg or at the rock. The town has some great shopping, food and cold beer! As usual I took the family and we had a little picnic on the top. Careful with your trash though it's very windy so be sure and take a backpack or something to quickly stuff you trash into. The plants and wildlife are plentiful. Be sure and check out the history of the place inside the check-in station. It's a great hike I look forward to going back and doing the full loop and having an overnight stay.
Long way to go for a short walk
Balcones Canyonlands NWR - Warbler Vista [Hiking] - 11/24/2006  [View Log Page]

I had a great time. My five year old and I made the hike. I didn't realize that it was that far out. We did see alot of intersting plants and bugs so the little one thought it was great. It was a little disheartening that the highway was in view for alot of the hike but it was nice to gain some elevation and see the valley. It's a great place to teach kids direction with a compass due to the view. Be careful with little ones there because the trail does get kinda steep at times and the ants there are HUGE! My little one happend upon a ant pile and it made for an unenjoyable ten minutes. When you get to the top of the hill it is a great place to have a picknic and enjoy nature.
Great Trail for Kids

I liked the trail. I'm guessing the fall/winter is a better time to go because the falls weren't falling. Good place to break in youngsters on the necessity of preserving our natural habitat. Challenging for my four year old but she kept up fine.
Awesome,Awesome,Awesome!
Good Water Trail [Hiking] - 5/13/2006  [View Log Page]
Rating: 5stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 4stars
Distance: 10.80 Miles Duration: N/A
This was a wonderful trail. Alot more challenging than I thought it would be. My wife and I hiked it. We ste out from Cedar Break and ended in Camp Tejas. We carried all of our gear for the overnight stay at Tejas. If I had it to do all over again. I would have set-up camp at Tejas and carried a lighter load on the trail. Contrary to the map the trail is not just hiking lakeside. There are hills, fields and bluffs. Offers lost of wildlife (seen 8 deer) and the cactus were in bloom. Only passed a couple of hikers. All-in-all it was a great hike.
