Impressive with sharp contrasts
Blunn Creek Preserve [Hiking] - 1/20/2013  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 3stars
Distance: 2.00 Miles Duration: 1 hour

The cliff drop-off down the the creek bed is very impressive, especially when you contrast it to the impressive view of St. Edward's University and of the City.  The recent work done on the trail is impressive with an emphasis upon native plant survival.  This hike will only improve with time.

Took the West Hike from the Blue Hole
Georgetown - San Gabriel Trail [Hiking] - 1/20/2013  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 3stars
Distance: 3.00 Miles Duration: 2 hours

Just behind the restrooms, I took a hike that ran along the side of much of Scenic Drive.  It does not appear to be the same hike as is described below as it wound along the river and there were sharp incline and declines with breathtaking views of the river.  Really a great hike.  The only drawback was the constant sound of I-35.  I would have ranked some of the difficulty higher but didn't want to skew the rating away from the east directional hike that wraps around the city park.  This hike was foot only and only for the steady footed hiker in some places.  Made me think of Hobits!  I will return!

Dog Friendly with great views and some challenges
Dana Peak Park [Hiking] - 1/5/2013  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 3stars Solitude: 2point5stars
Distance: 4.00 Miles Duration: N/A

There are dogs all over this park but most people appear to have cleaned up.  The main trail is just a gravel road down to the lake.  You can detour up a hill and find yourself on Dana Peak, very rapidly.  Hang left on the way up to get the best vistas while walking.  The hike off the peak is a bit steep in places and you may need to look down a bit to keep your footing.  Back on the mail path, go up the hill and hang a left for a detour that will feel like you are trespassing on someone's private farm  No real views there but the light through the overhanding trees and a few moments of open grass area make this hike special and very quiet.

Variable hike of solitude and wilderness
Chalk Ridge Falls Park [Hiking] - 12/8/2012  [View Log Page]
Rating: 3point5stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 4stars
Distance: 5.00 Miles Duration: 4 hours

When you enter, there are lots of people fishing and hanging out in this park.  As you go further back into the park, you will slowly drop away from people and see more and more of the wild.  The trail eventually becomes less marked and you will have to pick your way through a lot of brush in places.  There is a trail and you can find it but you have to be adventurous.  The cave is a real high point if you can find your way.  There is a high road and a low road in the beginning.  The tempation is to follow close to the water but take the high point either going in or coming out to gain a beautiful experience with light as it falls through tall trees.  Lots of butterflies in this park and some trees appear to be oozing some nectar because the butterflies were clinging to the trunks of several.  I come here all the time and it is a magical place.
