quiet short trail in Old West Austin

Distance: 1.00 Mile Duration: N/A
Reed Park is closed till next Spring - a million dollar plus restoration is being carried out on the water lines and the trail all the way to the lake...sounds like this will be a place to visit next Spring...
meandering trail but dull scenery for a hike.
McKinney Falls State Park - 10/21/2005  [View Log Page]

Distance: 5.00 Miles Duration: N/A
Found this hike to be longer than 3 miles. According to my pedometer it was over 4.5 miles, and probably 5 miles - not including the walk from the parking area across the falls to the sign identifying the trail. I became concerned that maybe I was doubling back without realizing it, however, I had not veered off the narrow footpath - I like that the footpath meandered - saw a few birds, a few butterflies and near the falls I saw many dragonflies. Was astonished, over half way on the trail came upon a huge office complex that I believe are the office buildings for the Texas Wildlife Parks Department. I was the only one on the trail and wore high top soft hiking shoes - the trail was rough enough and with two areas of scree I was glad I had the protection for my ankles. The scenery was dull - one spot borders an open field and the rest is typcial Austin hill country. At the start of the hike is the burned out shell of the McKinney home and near the end of the trail is the remains of the old Grist Mill - with the hot dry early fall it was easy crossing the "moonscape" rock area where the water runs to the falls - didn't have time to explore the beach or the falls but for sure the trail is longer than 3 miles...the longer trail knocked my timing off so that instead of finishing 4:20 it was 5:10, which meant leaving during rush hour traffic.
varied scenery - hiking near water is special
Bull Creek - 9/22/2005  [View Log Page]
Rating: 5stars Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 2point5stars
Distance: 2.60 Miles Duration: N/A
I've hiked this trail many times in all sorts of weather - it is one of my favorite in-town hikes - the trail is wide on the east bank - sometimes high overlooking the creek and othertimes on the same level with the creek - weekends the trail can be busy and I have never been alone on the east side although, I have been alone on the shorter west side trail - this time only walked to the big falls - a grandfather, with 3 young boys came along. The boys need the break having just made the long exodus from Houston - they took their shoes off to spend time exploring in the water - cute kids that added to the hike/walk another opportunity to smile...always have to stop and explore the old stone walls and while walking note the changing variety of fauna - although dogs allowed I have come upon a deer or two, loads of dragonflies and all sorts of creek bugs, frogs and once had a water snake seemingly chased me down the stream. Love laying in the stream, clothes and all - the only downer is the sound of the traffic from loop 360 - the falls does drown out the highway sounds.
